The South African has been handed one of the top clubs in Africa after his exploits at Masandawana
Former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has challenged Rhulani Mokwena to shine in Morocco just like his countrymate Fadlu Davids.
Mokwena was shown the door by the Premier Soccer League heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns, allowing Wydad Athletic Club to capitalise on the chance to work with the 37-year-old tactician. The South African was confirmed by the North Africans on Thursday.
The vocal coach has a massive task of ensuring his team bounces back from a poor 2023/24 season that saw them finish sixth in the Botola Pro League, eventually missing out the forthcoming Caf Champions League competition.
Mosimane optimistic Mokwena will shine in Morocco
The former Al Ahly coach believes Mokwena will make his mark in Morocco just like Davids. The latter was serving as former Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinbbauer's assistant coach at Raja Casablanca.
Davids has since left and is now the head coach of Tanzanian giants Simba SC who are determined to end Yanga SC's dominance in domestic football.
The duo helped their team to win the League and the Throne Cup – on both occasions outsmarting recently appointed Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi who was in charge of AS FAR Rabat.
“Congratulations coach Rhulani! Big opportunity for you and many South Africa coaches. All the best in [Casablanca],” he posted on his social media account.
“South Africa has got a lot of talented coaches, and coach Fadlu Davids never disappointed there.”
This is the first time Mokwena is working out of Mzansi. Apart from Masandawana, he has worked at Chippa United and Orlando Pirates.
Mokwena’s attractive style of play, with an emphasis on playing from the back and dominating possession, has endeared him to many fans across the continent and Wydad hope he will employ the same technique there.
