Muhsin was ahead of Barcelona! Zwane reveals how coach shaped Chiefs

AmaZulu FC co-coach Arthur Zwane insists former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral was tactically ahead of many teams including Spanish giants Barcelona.

Zwane played under Ertugral in his first stint as the Glamour Boys coach between 2007 and 2009.

It was at this time Amakhosi played some good football with some exceptional marking and tactics. However, Mangethe concedes a lot of work was done behind the scenes by the technical team.

He says Ertugral took his time to analyse opponents extensively and ensured all his players understood their assignments on the pitch. Zwane believes the current Cape Town City coach is the best he played for during his active days as a player.

“The man was ahead of the times. He was preparing the team to the tee. On Monday you already knew how you would approach the weekend game,” he told iDiski Times.

“He would take you through a video session minute by minute and make you know of the opposition’s weaknesses and strengths and if you lost it would be from the mistakes he told you not to make. He was that type of a coach, more like a fortune teller. I think he was too tactical for SA players; he was at a different level.

“What we were doing, the pressure game, it was even before Barcelona introduced it. Before Barcelona started dominating, we were playing that game at Chiefs, setting pressing traps, combination plays, playing in small areas, coming out of tight situations at high speed, and doing synchronized movements, you knew when to go when your teammate was making a run.

“After Muhsin left, the new ones who came were not close to him. He was at a different level.”
