South African football united in mourning Orlando Pirates legend

Tributes continue to pour in for Orlando Pirates legend and former Bafana Bafana coach Stanley Tshabalala who passed away on Thursday.

Commonly known as Screamer, the 75-year-old succumbed to injuries sustained after being shot in March at his house during a robbery incident.

Three armed men invaded his residence and made away with valuables, at the same time inflicting ‘Piano’ with fatal injuries.

The South African football fraternity has united in mourning the football great with tributes coming in from all corners of the country.

SAFA president eulogises Tshabalala

“I wish to extend my sincerest condolences to the family of Stanley Tshabalala and we are praying for them to be comforted. May God grant the family healing during this difficult time. This news is such a shock and we as SAFA would like to convey our deepest sympathy and heartfelt sorrow to his family, friends and the club during this difficult time,” said the SAFA president Dr Danny Jordaan.

Amakhosi remember one of their founders

Kaizer Chiefs were also among those who mourned their former player.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Stanley ‘Screamer’ Tshabalala. A former Kaizer XI and Kaizer Chiefs player – he was also the Club’s Technical Director between 1996 & 2001. We convey our condolences to the Tshabalala family and Orlando Pirates FC and the South African football family at large. May his soul rest in peace,” said Amakhosi.

PSL clubs mourn the legendary figure

Stellenbosch FC and PSL rivals SuperSport United also reacted to the former Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach’s demise.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Stanley ‘Screamer’ Tshabalala, a legendary figure in South African football. Our condolences go out to his family and friends, as well as to the wider footballing fraternity. May his soul rest in peace,” said the club.

“Our deepest condolences to the families, friends and football fraternity for the tragic loss of the legendary, Stanley ‘Screamer' Tshabalala. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” SuperSport posted on X.

Also known as ‘Shoe-shine’ Tshabalala was among Kaizer Chiefs' founders before he later moved to Sundowns where he earned his nickname ‘Screamer.’

He is remembered for being the first South Africa coach, in 1992, when the country was reinstated to the world of football after being locked out owing to Apartheid. He also served at Orlando Pirates as the team's Technical Director.
