Nedbank Cup 2025: Can Jose Riveiro sign off with third consecutive title?

Published on by

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro was appointed as the Buccaneers head coach in 2022, tasked with rebuilding the team into a formidable force.

He made an immediate impact upon his arrival at the Soweto giants in 2022, securing both the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup trophies in his debut season.

His successful tenure has since seen him lift a total of five trophies for Orlando Pirates: three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups.

However, as announced by the club last week, the Spanish coach will be departing at the end of the current season when his contract expires.

With two months left in the 2024/2025 season, Riveiro still has three opportunities to further enhance his trophy collection with Orlando Pirates: the Nedbank Cup, the Betway Premiership, and the CAF Champions League.

The Buccaneers are currently in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals and are set to face Marumo Gallants this Sunday, April 13th, at 15:00 at the Orlando Stadium.

Despite a their loss to Marumo Gallants in the Betway Premiership a few weeks ago, the Soweto giants are considered the favorites for this upcoming Nedbank Cup semi-final clash.

PLAYERS WANT TO GIVE RIVEIRO A PERFECT SEND-OFF

Pirates players had hoped Riveiro would extend his stay beyond the current 2024/2025 season, but they now know that the next two months will be their last with him at the helm.

While this news has been met with disappointment within the squad, it could serve as added motivation for them to give the coach a memorable farewell, possibly by winning one of the remaining trophies, with the Nedbank Cup being one of the targets.

Notably, since his arrival in South Africa, Riveiro has maintained an unblemished record in the Nedbank Cup, having led Pirates to victory against Sekhukhune United in the 2023 final and against Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2024 final.
