Nedbank Cup 2025: Facts and interesting stats ahead of semi-final fixtures

The Nedbank Cup enters the semi-final stage with mouth-watering meetings lined up on Sunday April 13.

Defending champions Orlando Pirates will take on Marumo Gallants in the early kick off before Mamelodi Sundowns host Kaizer Chiefs in the other semi-final fixture.

The Nedbank Cup has been one of the most hotly-contested trophies in South African football since its first edition in 1971 and since then, a number of records have been set while there are clubs with multiple wins and others still looking for their first one.

Kaizer Chiefs winger Pule Mmodi and Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa are the Nedbank Cup top scorers so far this season with four goals each while former Pirates defender Sandile Mthethwa, now at AmaZulu, Mamelodi Sundowns’ Tashreeq Mathews, Dzenan Zajmovicof TS Galaxy and Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel are all on three goals each.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile is the leading scorer in the competition with 14 goals from 24 matches scored for both his current club and former team Highlands Park.

His Sundowns team-mate Iqraam Rayners is next with 10 goals from 19 matches scored for four clubs, being the Brazilians, Stellenbosch FC, SuperSport United and Santos.

Mabasa is joint third with nine goals scored in the competition for three clubs, same as Magesi forward Rhulani Manzini, who has done it for six sides.

Youngest player ever in Nedbank Cup

Thifhelimbilu Magalela remains the youngest player to ever feature in the Nedbank Cup after turning out for Venda FC during their 3-1 win over Pretoria Callies on December 15, 2021 aged just 14 years, 11 months and 18 days.

Most successful player in Nedbank Cup history

Grant Kekana Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns centre-back Grant Kekana is the most successful player in the competition as he is the only one with three titles after winning the trophy twice with SuperSport United and once with the Brazilians.

Most successful coach in the Nedbank Cup

Englishman Stuart Baxter is the coach with the most Nedbank Cup trophies after winning three, two with SuperSport (2016 and 2017) and with Kaizer Chiefs in 2014.

Pirates coach Jose Riveiro will join him, if he leads his team to a third title in a row this season, after winning in 2023 and 2024 while Pitso Mosimane (2015 and 2020) also has two from his stint at Sundowns.

Kaizer Chiefs are the most successful club in Nedbank Cup history with 13 titles, followed by Pirates, who have 10, Sundowns third with six, while SuperSport have five.

All the teams set to contest this season’s semi-finals have won the Nedbank Cup with Pirates claiming it back-to-back in 2023 and 2024 while Sundowns’ last win was in 2022, when they succeeded Gallants, who had won the 2021 crown.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs have the most titles but their last trophy was won in 2013.

The Nedbank Cup has a prize money pool of about R20 million, making it one of the most valuable cup competitions in South African football.

This large sum is allocated to participant teams based on their performance throughout the event.

A significant R7 million awaits the winner, R2.5 million goes to the second-placed team while R1 million will go to each of the two teams that will be eliminated at the semi-final.
