Kaizer Chiefs came from behind to stun Mamelodi Sundowns and seal a ticket to the Nedbank Cup final on Sunday.
With the game looking like it was headed to extra time, Ashley Du Preez scored an 88th minute winner for Chiefs to steal the match in favour of Nasreddine Nabi’s side and set up a first Soweto Derby cup final in 11 years.
Sundowns had gone ahead in first half stoppage time when Teboho Mokoena fired home an unstoppable shot from a freekick as Miguel Cardoso’s team went to the break leading 1-0.
Wandile Duba makes Lucas Suarez pay
The Brazilians kept threatening after the break but it took Chiefs 12 minutes to find the leveler.
Sundowns defender Lucas Suarez made a casual pass which was intercepted by Wandile Duba and the Chiefs forward raced towards goal before firing past Ronwen Williams to draw level in the 57th minute.
Both sides then stayed resolute with little separating them and it looked like the game would be decided in extra time or even post-match penalties.
However, Chiefs had an ace up their sleeves as in the final two minutes of the 90, a neat exchange of passes around the Sundowns box yielding the winner.
Who will win the Soweto Derby final?
George Matlou started the move before he crossed in the box and Du Preez latched onto the ball to direct it into the goal as Chiefs stole it at the death and avenged their three losses against Sundowns this season.
It is the first domestic cup final for Chiefs since 2019 and leaves them on course to win a first trophy since 2015.
The win sets up a mouth-watering Soweto Derby in the final as Chiefs will face off with Orlando Pirates, who beat Marumo Gallants 1-0 in the other semi-final earlier.
Chiefs and Pirates will be facing off in a first league cup final since 2007 with the match set to be held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on May 10.
