Nedbank Cup: Date set for Sundowns vs Sekhukhune quarter-final

Mamelodi Sundowns will now take on Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final on Friday, March 28 at 19.00 after the match had been postponed.

Sundowns were initially set to face Sekhukhune on March 8 for a place in the semi-final but the match was called off a day before kick off after it was discovered the Lucas Moripe Stadium was scheduled to host another fixture on the same day.

According to a statement released by the PSL on March 7, the league organisers learnt that a FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier, set to kick off at 15.00, had been booked to take place at the Lucas Moripe and as a consequence, decided to postpone the Nedbank Cup match.

Attempts to secure the venue in time for the Nedbank Cup quarter-final proved futile, forcing the match to be called off.

Now, the two teams will have little time after the international break to be ready for the crucial match.

Sundowns have eight players in the Bafana Bafana squad set for two crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers at home to Lesotho on March 21 and away to Benin four days later while others are away with their national teams.

Sekhukhune do not have a player in the Bafana squad but have some away with their national teams and they will have little time to be ready for the Nedbank Cup match.

Sundowns had hoped to play their next match on April 1, when they start their CAF Champions League quarter-final campaign at home to Esperance, but will now have to contend with an extra fixture in March.

The winner of the quarter-final fixture will take on Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-final whose dates are yet to be revealed.
