Nedbank Cup: Pule Mmodi at the double as Kaizer Chiefs rout Free Agents

Published on by

Pule Mmodi scored twice as Kaizer Chiefs secured a 4-0 victory over lower league side Free Agents in the Nedbank Cup on Sunday.

Chiefs easily dispatched their rivals to get into the Round of 16 and should have been ahead after three minutes when Nkosingiphile Ngcobo had his shot saved.

However, with Chiefs marking 3,550 days since their last trophy, Amakhosi might have realised that this is their only chance for silverware this season and in the 18th minute, the floodgates opened.

Mmodi benefited from a rare assist from the goalkeeper when Bruce Bvuma brought in a ball from the back which went past everyone and the winger reacted quickest to score.

Mmodi misses hat-trick chance

In the 25th minute, Mmodi and Chiefs were celebrating their second when a good combination saw Wandile Duba unselfishly pass the ball to him. Duba rounded the goalkeeper and got into a tight angle, opting to pass to Mmodi instead of taking a shot.

In the 28th minute, Mmodi should have completed his hat-trick after getting the better of the goalkeeper but opting to pass to Happy Mashiane instead of scoring in an empty net.

Free Agents had their moment in the 33rd minute when Sello Hlabitwa found himself one-on-one with Bvuma but allowed the goalkeeper to take the ball.

Controversial Chiefs goal

Chiefs would be forced into an early change when Duba went out through injury in the 43rd minute to be replaced by Ranga Chivaviro.

After the break, Chiefs scored a third goal in some controversial fashion, Miguel Inacio heading in from an offside position, a goal that sparked protest from the Free Agents players, an incident that led to a red card for Adebayo.

Chivaviro would make it 4-0 for Chiefs eight minutes from time when he received the ball from Yusuf Maart.

The midfielder won possession on the edge of the box and squared it to the striker who made no mistakes as Chiefs completed the rout.
