Nedbank Cup Round of 16 Draw: Who are Chiefs & Pirates playing?

Published on by

There will be no mouth-watering clashes pitting the ‘Big Three’ in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 after they avoided each other in the draw conducted on Wednesday.

Defending champions Orlando Pirates will take on Baroka in the Round of 16, a fixture in which they are favourites to make it through to the quarter-final, while Kaizer Chiefs have a tricky meeting against PSL rivals Chippa United.

Chiefs put lower league opposition Free Agents to the sword in the Round of 32, winning 4-0, but will have a different test against the Chilli Boys for a place in the quarter-final, given this is their only chance for silverware this season.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns, beaten in last season’s final by Pirates, take on another lower league side in Mpheni Home Defenders. Just like in the Round of 32, when they beat Sibanye Golden Stars 5-2, the Brazilians have home advantage in the Round of 16 fixture as well.

What are the other fixtures?

In other fixtures, SuperSport United have a tricky test against Cape Town Stars while Stellenbosch FC also have PSL opposition in the form of Polokwane City, who are in good mood after keeping hold of their key players Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi, in the midseason transfer window.

The draw, conducted at the SuperSport studios in Randburg, did not reveal the dates for the Round of 16 fixtures which will be confirmed later.
