Nedbank Cup Soweto Derby: Why take Chiefs vs Pirates to Durban? ‘It’s not about how much we offered’

The Moses Mabhida Stadium manager Vusi Mazibuko has justified the Premier Soccer League's decision to take the Nedbank Cup final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to Durban as opposed to the FNB Stadium.

The Glamour Boys came from a goal down to beat favourites Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 to make the last hurdle that will be played on May 10. The defending champions, Bucs, made the final after beating Marumo Gallants by a solitary goal.

There have been complaints about the decision to take the final to the Moses Mabhida Stadium that can host at most 60,000 supporters as opposed to the FNB Stadium which can accommodate up to 100,000 fans. Afrik-Foot understands the PSL decided to take the game to Durban owing to the Ultra South Africa music event scheduled for May 9 and 10 at Nasrec.

“The Premier Soccer League makes decisions about where they take their finals. It is not about how much or what we offered,” Mazibuko said as quoted by the Sowetan.

On February 1, there were 12,000 fake tickets generated, which led to chaos at the FNB Stadium. Mazibuko says there will be a way to deal with frauds ahead of the final, “There are structures that deal with the management of the game, including tickets, access and dealing with any other criminal elements that may creep in.

“Those meetings will include the police, the league, the venue and other stakeholders. Once that has happened, an announcement will be made to the relevant structures as to how access will be controlled,” he concluded.

This will be the 19th final to be played in Durban since 2010; the most recent was the MTN8 showdown between Pirates and Stellenbosch that the former won
