Nedbank Cup: Sundowns survive second-half’s Stars scare to advance

Published on by

Mamelodi Sundowns sealed their place in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 after securing a 5-2 win against minnows Sibanye Golden Stars at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday night.

Masandawana scored three goals in the first half, but a blunder by Ronwen Williams helped the visitors to get two after the break before Arthur Sales sealed the deal.

Nevertheless, the Brazilians finished the game with 10 men after the sending off of Bathusi Aubaas with a quarter an hour to go.

Matthews and Khoza give Downs a good start

The defending Premier Soccer League champions needed just two minutes to get their first goal. Brazilian Arthur Sales set up youngster Malibongwe Khoza for an easy finish.

In the 15th minute, the hosts got their second strike through Tashreeq Matthews who rounded the goalkeeper before tapping home, to finish off a nice Kutlwano Letlhaku pass.

Just four minutes to the break, it was 3-0 thanks to clinical finish by Matthews.

Williams' blunder almost brings Stars back

Just before the 54th minute, it looked like Sundowns had done their work. However, Ronwen Williams allowed what looked like an easy save, by his standards, to slip under his body. It was a reward for the determined Mojalefa Mokhatla who had been spotted by Mafanyane Mokitimi.

The scorer became the provider in the 61st minute; first, he Mosa Lebusa for dead, before setting up Boeletsang Rankali for an easy finish.

Arthur Sales then restored a two-goal lead in the 69th minute with a tap-in after a pass from a seemingly offside Kobamelo Kodisang.

Despite Bathusi Aubass' red card in the 76th minute, Sundowns added the fifth in the latter stages of the match through Kodisang to make it 5-2.
