Onyango & Nku set to take Mamelodi Sundowns past Mokwena achievements

The Premier Soccer League champions are ready to get more crowns in the 2024/25 season.

Mamelodi Sundowns stars Denis Onyango and midfielder Lesiba Nku are confident Masandawana can exceed Rulani Mokwena's 2023/24 achievements.

The 37-year-old won two titles last season – the inaugural African Football League and the Premier Soccer League. The Brazilians further reached the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup finals but failed to beat Orlando Pirates.

The vocal tactician reportedly fell out with Flemming Berg who is the Sporting Director, which led to the firing of the former. Moroccan heavyweights Wydad Athletic Club have since employed the South African on a three-year deal.

Legendary Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango is now convinced the Brazilians have what it takes to win more trophies next season.

“Of course, the expectations are always high, I know of seven trophies [Sundowns will play] including the [expanded 2025 Fifa] Club World Cup [to be held in the United States],” the veteran custodian told the club's media team.

“But we need to have targets and that's what we are building towards, trying to have the right mentality and win as much as we can, more than what we won last season.

“Last campaign, we won only two trophies, so the target is to win more than two this season. We are working towards that.”

The 28-year-old Nku has seconded his teammate, “We have a lot of competitions to play. We have [seven] Cups to play in.

“So, I think the team is doing well,  we are preparing well as Mamelodi Sundowns, we know we want to win every game and every cup we play we want to win it. So, I think everyone is ready to compete, get the results, and win the cups.”

The Premier Soccer League champions have parted ways with Bongani Zungu, Gaston Sirino, Junior Mendieta, Brian Onyango, Promise Mkhuma, and Thabiso Kutumela.

They have brought in Kobamelo Kodisang, Arthur Sales, Kegan Johannes, and Asekho Tiwani.
