Percy Tau responds to Bafana Bafana snub with brace for Al Ahly

The Lion of Judah scored twice as the Cairo Red Devils secured a big win in Kenya

Percy Tau put in a man of the match display for Al Ahly as he scored a brace to help them to a 3-0 victory against Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in the CAF Champions League.

Tau responded to the latest speculation linking him away from the club in the most emphatic style, scoring two goals in either half, as the defending champions ran riot in Nairobi on Sunday.

Al Ahly needed just 14 minutes to break the deadlock when Rami Rabia slotted home the opening goal after a neat exchange of passes with Tau and the Bafana Bafana forward then got on the scoresheet three minutes later.

A high press from Al Ahly saw Rami win the ball on the edge of the box before squaring it to Tau who made no mistake on his favourite left foot.

Bafana forward was a thorn in Gor Mahia’s flesh

Tau nearly had an assist just a minute later when he robbed a Gor Mahia defender of the ball but Al Ahly failed to capitalise.

The 12-time African champions then slowed things down in the second half and as their hosts grew into the game but Gor Mahia failed to take advantage of their opportunities.

With 15 minutes to go, a mixup in the Gor Mahia defence saw Tau latch onto the ball to poke home his second, and his team’s third, as Al Ahly took a giant step towards group stage qualification ahead of the second leg in Cairo on September 21.

Tau’s future at Al Ahly has been the subject of speculation with reports claiming he was out of coach Marcel Koller’s plans and that the club was looking for the best way to part ways.

What does the future hold for Percy Tau?

The former Mamelodi Sundowns defender had featured sparingly in the final months of last season and it was assumed he had played his last match for the club when the 2023-24 campaign ended.

His uncertainty at the club saw Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos drop him from the squad that faced Uganda and South Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month with the tactician saying the player was not mentally ready.

However, his inclusion from the start against Gor Mahia suggests he may still have a future at the club which will be a big boost to his chances of returning to the national team.
