Percy Tau: Why Bafana Bafana forward could be out of Qatar soon

Published on by

Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau could be on his way out of Qatar following the conclusion of the Qatar Stars League season on Friday.

Tau joined Qatar SC from Egyptian giants Al Ahly in January and signed a six-month contract, which had an option to extend for a further two years.

However, his contract included some conditions that needed to be met before it was extended and this is what could see him leave soon.

What does Tau’s contract stipulate?

Tau’s contract was performance-based as he needed to impress in the first six months before earning a two-year extension on his deal that is reported to be worth R16.8 million per month.

He was also to play a key role in helping Qatar SC avoid relegation as they were second from bottom of the 12-team league when he arrived.

Qatar SC have since survived, having done just enough to finish in 10th position, before losing 2-0 to Al Rayyan in the final match of the season on Friday, but he has not set the stage alight in Doha.

Tau is yet to score for Qatar SC

Tau has played nine matches since moving to the club and managed four assists, which might not be considered a successful spell, as without goals, it appears that a new and lucrative two-year contract might be off the table.

Unless he convinces Qatar SC that goals will come in plenty from next season, Tau might be looking for a new club soon.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns winger will, however, not be short suitors if he becomes a free agent as there are clubs in South Africa who might pounce while Egyptian giants Zamalek have recently been reported to be monitoring his situation.
