Pirates cut Sundowns lead after Chippa win

Published on by

Orlando Pirates secured a vital 1-0 away victory against Chippa United, narrowing the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns in the league title chase.

Returning to the touchline after a two-match suspension, coach Jose Riveiro made significant changes to the Pirates' starting lineup, handing debuts to Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Siyabonga Ndlozi.

Tactical stalemate defined much of the first half between Chippa and Pirates, with clear chances at a premium.

Tshegofatso Mabasa's weak effort for Pirates, comfortably saved by Stanley Nwabali in the 38th minute, was the closest either side came to scoring.

SIBISI’S OPENER AHEAD OF HALF-TIME

However, Pirates broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime. Nkosinathi Sibisi's well-timed run and header from a corner gave his team a crucial lead in first-half injury time.

Chippa showed fleeting attacking intent early in the second half, with Mohau Nkota's shot from the edge of the box flying high.

Pirates maintained control of possession in the second half, but struggled to unlock a resolute Chippa defense.

Ultimately, it was their own defensive organization that secured the victory, denying Chippa any genuine scoring opportunities in a tight 1-0 win.

This result sees Pirates reduce the gap to league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to 16 points, with the advantage of four games in hand as the title race intensifies.
