‘Pirates have to do better’ Riveiro adamant Galaxy game not a done deal

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro is not impressed with the way his team played against Chippa United ahead of a crucial Caf Champions League fixture against Jwaneng Galaxy.

On Wednesday, the Buccaneers came from a goal down courtesy of Andile Jali to get a 2-1 win in the Premier Soccer League outing thanks to Tshegofatso Mabasa and Monnapule Saleng.

On Saturday, Bucs will host Galaxy in the second leg of the continental outing with a massive advantage following a 2-0 away win.

Pirates have to complete the job

The Spaniard insists his work is not yet done and the job must be completed on Saturday at the Orlando Stadium.

“We have to complete the job against Jwaneng; in football, there's nothing such as an almost done job, that's not real, but it's in people's imaginations,” Riveiro stated.

“The truth is, we have to play the second game against an extremely difficult team and we have to do it at a better level than [the game against Chippa].

“We need to learn from [Wednesday's] game and capitalise in the future on playing at home… we can't allow the opponents in Orlando to deserve to lead, I think Chippa deserved to be ahead of us. It is something that mustn't happen.”

Has Riveiro leaked his lineup against Galaxy?

As opposed to the previous season, Riveiro has not tinkered with his starting team for the last few games. The Soweto giants have not yet tasted a loss in the seven outings across all competitions.

The tactician has explained why it has been vital for him not to make changes to the starting team. He has, however, hinted he might be making a few changes to avoid fatigue.

“As you can see we've managed to repeat the starting XI now for the past few games. I think that it's important that we get that consistency in the starting XI as well when we get the results. At the same time, we need to introduce players because we are playing every two to three days now.

“We have enough talent on the bench and in the stands, if you look at the players that didn't make the [match-day squad], you'll have an idea. So there's going to be time for all of them soon because we need everybody. Probably in the coming games, there's going to be variations in the starting XI, new faces as well.”

A draw or any kind of win will see the South Africans get their slot in the group stage.
