Tshegofatso Mabasa: Orlando Pirates striker breaks silence over Bafana Bafana snub

Published on by

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa is not getting discouraged by his constant snubs by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

Mabasa has not been part of the national team since October 2021 and there was hope that he could make a comeback when he was included in the preliminary squad to face Congo this month before he was dropped from the final 23.

The Pirates forward has, however, continued doing his talking on the pitch and was on target on Saturday, scoring the second goal, albeit in controversial fashion, as the Buccaneers claimed a historic third straight MTN8 title following a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch.

What does Mabasa make of his Bafana snubs?

“Coming to the national team issue or topic it will happen, if God wants it to happen it will happen,” Mabasa told the media after Saturday’s match as quoted by iDiski Times.

“I will just continue to put the ball into the back of the net and continue to work hard at training because I know that I have the support of my teammates.

“Everyone keeps telling me you have to head up, continue to work hard, it will happen.”

Pirates striker has consistently been overlooked

Mabasa has three goals across all competitions this season and continues to lead the line for Pirates but Broos has consistently overlooked him.

The striker missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite enjoying a good season at his club and is also set to watch the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers from a distance.

Bafana Bafana will face Congo at home on October 11 before playing them away four days later in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
