‘One of the best’ – Pitso Mosimane lauds ex-Kaizer Chiefs & Mamelodi Sundowns attacker

The veteran tactician has sung the praises of the Zimbabwean forward who has rediscovered his form

Former Mamelodi Sudowns coach Pitso Mosimane has lauded Zimbabwean striker Khama Billiat as one of the best players he has ever trained.

Billiat spent five years with Mosimane at Sundowns before he left the club to join Kaizer Chiefs where injuries and poor form hampered his stay.

Since leaving Chiefs at the end of the 2022-23 season, Billiat briefly trained with SuperSport United but did not find suitors in South Africa, before he returned home to sign for Yadah Stars FC, where he has regained his form, scoring nine league goals to be awarded Player of the Month for July.

Pitso Mosimane has waxed lyrical about the striker

“Class is permanent. One of the best players I have ever coached. I phoned him for a full year, every week, convincing him that I will give him support and platform to showcase his talent and that he is the one to help us win the CAF Champions League,” said Mosimane, while reacting to Billiat’s recent upturn in form.

“Scores, assists, recovers, steals lots of balls, and he is very strong on the ball despite his small frame. His first touch on bringing down an aerial ball was amazing. He really loved Hlompho Kekana’s long passes [his goal vs Platinum Stars away] What a player to watch in training more than games.

“I used to put Wayne Arendse on him to sharpen his skills and help him learn how to deal with big defenders. Wayne contributed a lot to his game. What a show I enjoyed in those weekly tactical sessions.

Should Khama Billiat make a return to the PSL?

“What a pleasure to watch Percy [Tau], Keegan [Dolly], Themba Zwane and Khama in one team at training.

“These guys used to score a lot of goals together. Hence they won all major CAF club trophies in one season playing together in the same team.”

The striker’s nine goals make him the second highest scorer in the division, two shy of the leading duo of William Manondo and Tymon Machope, and there has been talk of a possible return to the PSL.

Billiat scored 41 goals during his five-year stay at Sundowns between 2013 and 2018, winning three PSL titles, as well as the CAF Champions League.
