Celebrated South African tactician Pitso Mosimane has been appointed Esteghlal Football Club coach effective immediately.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach has replaced club legend Javad Nekounam who did not have a good start with the Persian Gulf Pro League heavyweights. The two-time Asian Champions League winners are currently placed 11th on the table of 16 teams after seven matches.
MT Sports, the agency that manages Mosimane, has confirmed the new development for their client.
The challenge awaiting us is steep – Mosimane
“Esteghlal FC is a very big club in the Gulf region, with a long and illustrious history. The two Asian Champions League stars on top of their badge tell you what kind of club this is,” the agency said in a statement.
Mosimane, alongside his technical team of Maahier Davids, Kabelo Rangoaga, Musi Matlaba, and Kyle Solomon has conceded it will not be a walk in the park.
“Their last trophy was won in 2022, and we can believe their fans are hungry for glory once again. The challenge that awaits us is steep, but it is our privilege to lead such a prolific club. I would like to thank the club leadership for placing their trust in us. We are ready to get to work,” he stated.
Mosimane's Gulf experience

Esteghlal recorded their second win on Thursday when they beat Mes Rafsanjan FC 3-2 but they are still seven points from leaders Sepahan, who have played one match less.
It would not be a walk into the unknown for Mosimane, if he agrees to sign for the club, given he has worked in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates since leaving Egyptian giants Al Ahly in July 2022.
‘Jingles’ handled Al Ahly Jeddah, leading them to promotion back to the Saudi Pro League in the 2022-23 season, before taking over Al Wehda in the UAE and worked at Abha, back in Saudi Arabia, failing to save them from relegation before leaving in June.
