PSL club’s boss: ‘We’re aiming to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns’

The president of a lowly PSL club has made a bold statement, aiming to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns from their decade-long dominance of the DStv Premiership.

Since the 2015/16 season, Bafana Ba Style have been nearly unstoppable, claiming eight league titles and only relinquishing the crown once to Bidvest Wits in the 2016/17 campaign.

AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu declares it's time to topple Mamelodi Sundowns from their long-held reign at the top of the league.

Zungu expresses confidence in Usuthu's ability to dethrone the champions, citing their impressive second-place finish in the 2020/21 season under Benni McCarthy's leadership.

“I don’t believe that it’s impossible to achieve a top four finish and I don’t believe it’s impossible to achieve a top two finish,” said Zungu.

“In the past four seasons, we’ve been probably the best number two. We got 54 points in the 2020/21 season.

“I think Pirates got 54 points two seasons ago, they didn’t get 54 points last season, they were number two. I believe that we’ve achieved some of the great things.

“Even Mamelodi Sundowns is a great team but we can reasonably aim to dethrone them just like all other ambitious teams must aim to dethrone them.

“They’ve done exceptionally well and we’re very proud of their accomplishments. But we need to dethrone them, someone has got to move them from the pinnacle that they’ve occupied for so long.

“And we believe AmaZulu must raise its hand to say we want to be counted.

“The question is, do we have requisite material to achieve that? We believe we’ve got a requisite material within the resources limitations that we have and that many teams have in this country.

“We believe we have the requisite material to compete and we will compete.”

AmaZulu finished the previous campaign in 11th position in the DStv Premiership, collecting 36 points in 30 league matches.
