The Jomo Cosmos founder is impressed by the work done by the Spanish coach

Orlando Pirates legend Jomo Sono hopes the club keeps hold of coach Jose Riveiro who he has credited for the club’s upturn in fortunes.

Riveiro is in his third season at Pirates and has won four trophies since arriving in July 2022, being the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, in each of the two seasons he has been in charge.

Riveiro has guided Pirates to a third straight MTN8 final, with a clash against Stellenbosch lined up on October 5, and has built a strong team that is tipped to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the PSL title this season, following back-to-back second place finishes.

What does Jomo Sono think of Jose Riveiro?

Sono is among those impressed by the work done by the Spanish tactician who was highly doubted when he was first appointed.

“He [Riveiro] knows what he is doing. I think he is a very good coach. He is not a coach who is after publicity, he just wants to do his job,” Sono said, as quoted by iDiski Times.

“You have coaches, I know one here in the NFD, who are just a publicity coach and that’s it. Some are not publicity coaches, they are just doing their jobs.”

As he enters into his third year, Sono hopes Pirates can extend the stay of Riveiro so that they keep reaping from his tactical acumen.

The tactician has exceeded expectations in Mzansi

“He has done a good job with the players. I hope he stays but knowing football, you can wake up tomorrow and he is gone. That’s football,” he added.

Riveiro arrived at Pirates with what was deemed as an underwhelming CV following stints as youth coach at Choco (Spain) and Celta Vigo, assistant coach at Honka, PK-35 Vantaa and HJK, all in Finland, with his only job as head coach being a two-year stint at Finnish club Inter Turku.

He has, however, exceeded expectations in South Africa and has Pirates fans dreaming of the league title again with trophies back in the cabinet.
