Ronwen Williams fires back at Mamelodi Sundowns’ critics

The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper is calm over the Brazilians woeful run of form

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams believes his side’s poor start to the season has ignited the fire in their belly to even do better.

Sundowns have won just one match this season, which they needed an own goal to claim a 1-0 victory against Polokwane City, that being the MTN8 quarter-final, before they were handed back-to-back 1-0 defeats by Stellenbosch FC to exit the competition.

That has seen observers question whether the Brazilians are capable of defending their league title, with some not sure if coach Manqoba Mngqithi has what it takes to replace Rulani Mokwena, but Williams feels it is an overreaction as Sundowns were bound to struggle under new management before picking momentum.

Were the Brazilians just ‘unlucky’ in their last three games?

“We all became very close to him [Mokwena] and we were achieving greatness but the club took a different direction. Yes, it is going to be difficult in the beginning but we can see what other people can’t see,” Williams told Marawa Sports Worldwide.

“We can see that we are one step away from being the Sundowns that people know. You can see the training; you can see it even in the games. We have been so unlucky in the games that we have played.”

The goalkeeper says the setback is actually a good thing for Sundowns as it has woken up the beast in them and they are going to become even harder to beat.

“Sometimes when setbacks happen so early, it is for even greater things to come,” he added.

Williams feels the setbacks have woken up the beast in Sundowns

“So, people should be careful to write us off too early and I am glad that it happened so early because now, it is going to ignite something different in us.

“Knowing how crazy we are over winning, and we crave that all the time, and that is what we are about as a team and we want to be the best in everything. So, now we have lost out and you will see the anger and you will see a different Sundowns in the next few weeks and months.”

Sundowns will be away to Mbabane Swallows in the CAF Champions League on Saturday before starting their PSL title defence at home to Tshwane rivals SuperSport United next Tuesday.
