Ronwen Williams reveals when he will return from injury

The goalkeeper has shared details of his recover after his two-month layoff

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams expects to be involved this weekend when his club take on Mbabane Swallows in the CAF Champions League.

Williams has been out since July after suffering a shoulder injury and missed Sundowns’ pre-season as well as the club’s first three games of the season.

Any hopes that he would be involved with the national team was dashed when he was excluded from the Bafana Bafana squad by coach Hugo Broos for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan this month.

The 32-year-old now feels he is ready to return to the pitch and could be handed a start in the Champions League second preliminary round tie as Sundowns take on the eSwatini champions at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

When will Ronwen Williams make a comeback?

“I am feeling good, I have resumed full training, I should be back on the field this weekend,” Williams told SuperSport TV.

“I feel rejuvenated, it has come at a perfect time for me. I played so much football in the last two years, I have played so many games for the national team and my club.

“It [injury] was actually a good thing because I got to miss football again and now that I am back, I am like a kid again I cannot wait to get to training and to be back on the field again.”

Williams’ return is a boost to coach Manqoba Mngqithi as he looks to bounce back from his side’s disappointing start to the season that saw them eliminated from the MTN8 at the semi-final stage.

The goalkeeper has set lofty targets this season

The Ballon d’Or nominee is looking to improve on last season’s achievements after his remarkable performance earned him a nomination for the prestigious Yashin Trophy.

“When things were not going well for me, I did not give up, I kept trying, I kept training. I have so many people to thank for the ones who have pushed me to great heights,” Williams weighed in on his Ballon d’Or nomination.

“I am looking forward to what next, what I can achieve and can I be consistent, can I do it again this year and that is a challenge that I go with every season.”
