Mamelodi Sundowns cut their gap to Orlando Pirates to three when they bounced back to winning ways with a 3-0 hammering of Cape Town City at the Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday.
Coach Manqoba Mngqithi got the response he was looking for after last weekend’s shock 1-0 loss to Polokwane City as his side put up an impressive display that was rewarded with a double from Peter Shalulile either side of Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s goal.
Shalulile opened his league account after 16 minutes with Costa adding the second in the 37th minute for a 2-0 lead at the break in favour of the champions.
Cape Town had no answer for ruthless Sundowns
It took Sundowns seven minutes after halftime to get out of sight when Shalulie completed a swift counter attacking move with a third goal for the Brazilians, who should have found a fourth one later through Khuliso Mudau.
Sundowns’ job was made easier by the sending off of Aprocius Petrus in the 80th minute for a second bookable offence, leaving Cape Town light on numbers for the remainder of the contest.
The Citizens rarely threatened Sundowns, who were full value for their win, which leaves them second on the table with 15 points from six matches, three behind leaders Pirates.
It was also a good warm up for Sundowns for their Carling Knockout quarter-final tie against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.
