Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has revealed why he was surprised when the Buccaneers sought his services in 2022.
The 27-year-old shot-stopper signed for the Buccaneers as a third choice goalkeeper, joining Richard Ofori and Siyabonga Mpontshane in the goalkeeping department.
However, he seized the opportunity to claim the starting position when Ofori sustained an injury and has since established himself firmly in that role.
He has played 58 matches in Ezimnyama Ngenkani colours, coming out with 19 clean-sheets and conceding 38 goals.
Speaking in an interview with iDiski Times, Chaine says he was shocked when he received a call from Mayfair since he was not even a number one goalkeeper at his previous club, Chippa United.
CHAINE EXPLAINS WHY HE SHOCKED WHEN PIRATES WANTED HIM
“Tjoee, when I look back and see how everything transpired, I always think to myself how mysterious God’s work is because you, as a person and as a player, set up big goals for yourself and drive yourself to get better and be a better football player.
“But in certain environments, you don’t see much progress, if I may say, but when you get a call for a move like this, you think to yourself, ‘what if I wasn’t prepared for it’? What if I was a person who doesn’t put a lot of energy into my game or into my craft?
“Then it would be so very difficult for me to get into such an environment and settle and be whatever that player might think he could achieve.
“For me, it was also a very big surprise for me, at that moment and at that stage in my career where I wasn’t even a number one goalkeeper at Chippa.
“I think I had only played two games that season, and for a move like this to come out, I just think destiny and God plans it and God sets it out at different times.”
