Banyana Banyana's Wafcon preparations
On Saturday, April 5, the African champions played Malawi in an international friendly at the UJ Soweto Campus.
It will also be a special game for veteran 39-year-old defender Noko Matlou, who has retired after serving the nation for 17 years. She started as a striker before transitioning to a dependable central defender.
dominating the proceedings from the first whistle much to the delight of a handful of fans who turned out to cheer the team.
The hosts scored their first goal in the 13th minute courtesy of Nonhlanhla Mthandi after a fine display in the early exchanges. Seven minutes later, Malawi conceded a penalty that Linda Mothalo coolly converted to give her team a deserved, first-half lead.
Mthandi then completed her brace in the 51st minute to ensure Matlou's final game ended on a high.
“I’m very happy at this moment, and going forward, I wish the team luck and well for WAFCON and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers,” Matlou said after the final whistle, as quoted by the Safa Media team.
The second meeting between the nations will be on Tuesday, April 8 in the same venue.
