Betway Premiership: Top five players to watch this season

Published on by

A number of thrilling players in the PSL are expected to deliver captivating performances this season, especially considering that football enthusiasts have been without football for over three months. Afrik-Foot look at the top five players to watch.

1 – Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Ribeiro played a pivotal role in Masandawana's domestic and continental successes. He often stepped up when Peter Shalulile was unavailable or underperforming, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess.

Despite facing injury setbacks, Ribeiro has shown great potential. At just 25 years old, he has adapted well to South African football and could be poised for an even stronger season this year.

2 – Relebohile Mofokeng (Orlando Pirates)

Mofokeng's impressive performances earned him prestigious awards last season. He was recognized as both the DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season and the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament.

As Pirates target the league title, Mofokeng is poised to be a key contributor. Despite his young age, he has proven to be a reliable and valuable asset to the team.

3 – Themba Zwane (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Zwane is a crucial figure in Sundowns' midfield. His absence can significantly impact the team's performance.

Despite his age, Zwane remains a key player for Sundowns.

He continues to contribute effectively and is a leader on the field. Following Mokwena's departure, Zwane's leadership will be essential in guiding the team and ensuring continued success.

4 – Patrick Maswanganyi (Orlando Pirates)

Maswanganyi quickly became a fan favorite at Pirates with his exceptional “kasi flava” skills. His impressive Pirates debut season earned him multiple PSL awards, including Player's Player of the Season, Midfielder of the Season, and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

The question now is whether Maswanganyi can consistently deliver at this high level. Maintaining such a high standard of performance can be challenging, but his resistance shows potential of him remaining consistent.

5 – Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns)

Last season's PSL Footballer of the Season award, Ballon d'or Yachine nominee and AFCON Golden Glove solidify Williams as the league's top player and Africa's number one goalkeeper.

His exceptional skills with both feet and hands make him the catalyst for Sundowns's attacks. He exudes calmness, especially when in possession, and thrives under pressure.

Given the recent technical team changes, Williams’ leadership will be crucial in maintaining team cohesion. His ability to guide and inspire his teammates will be invaluable.
