Steve Komphela recently returned to Mamelodi Sundowns as a senior coach and here is a detailed breakdown of his role at the club.
Komphela was initially at the Tshwane giants as a First Team coach between 2020 and 2022 before he departed the club to take over as head coach at the now-defunct Moroka Swallows.
In January, he left the Dube Birds and joined Golden Arrows in March and spent just three months at the Durban-based club before tendering his resignation and reunited with Sundowns.
His return came after Rulani Mokwena’s exit last month. He assumed the Senior Coach role which was previously held by Manqoba Mngqithi (now head coach) under Mokwena’s sole leadership.
While his main responsibility is being an “inter-mediator” between management, technical staff and players, Komphela also monitors junior players who could be ready to transition to the senior team.

“There are many different duties that he performs for the team but the main one is training and development of players, the physical, mental and psychological aspects from all the age groups of the club until the senior team where he sits on the bench,” the club’s insider said according to Soccer Laduma.
“In that duty he also monitors the junior players who are ready for the senior team as he works directly with the development structures of the club. He is an important inter-mediator between all the technical teams and their playing staff.”
Another source added: “He is a communicator between management and the team, mainly the players.”
“He also plays the role of a manager. In Europe he could have been what they call a first team coach while the head coach could have been a manager. But here we use head coach, assistant coach and senior coach. Those are his duties. He is a very important part of the team not just the technical team.”
