‘Stolen Chiefs player’ gets his chance with Bafana after Modiba’s omission

Bafana Bafana have been forced to make another change to the squad that will play Lesotho and Benin respectively in the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

South Africa will be at home in the first game on Friday, March 21 which will be staged at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. The second game on Tuesday will be played at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium.

However, coach Hugo Broos has once again been forced to make a change to his squad. On Sunday, he had to call Polokwane City midfielder Ndamulele Maphangule to replace the injured Orlando Pirates creative attacker Patrick Maswanganyi.

The Belgian has now confirmed another change to his squad a couple of days after playing Lesotho. Aubrey Modiba has been granted a leave with Sekhukhune defender Vuyo Letlapa getting a late call-up.

Why is Modiba out?

Letlapa was set to join Kaizer Chiefs from lower-tier side Jomo Cosmos, but the owner Jomo Sono claimed Babina Noko stole him. The 21-year-old has been consistent and has now been rewarded by Broos.

“It’s been a long time since we started camp with 23 players present, but one is not here, Aubrey Modiba, but he has something more important than being on a camp of the national time as his wife gives birth,” Broos revealed to the public.

“It needs to be in the presence of the father, this is why Aubrey is not here, but he might join us later but I think these things are more important in life than a qualification game for the World Cup.”

Bafana have collected seven points in Group C and will be hoping to collect maximum points in this international break to stand a chance of qualifying for the global competition for the first time since 2010.
