Marcelo Allende opens up on PSL awards snub

The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has shared opinion over his lack of recognition

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Marcelo Allende is only concerned about winning trophies with his team and not individual accolades.

Allende was among big names who missed out on the PSL awards with team-mate Ronwen Williams named PSL Footballer of the Season while Orlando Pirates star Patrick Maswanganyi scooped Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, Premiership Midfielder of the Season, and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament awards.

Some observers, however, felt Allende deserved some recognition but the player is not bothered by individual accolades as long as his team continues winning trophies.

How does Allende feel after PSL awards omission?

“Ah well, I don’t wanna say I’m disappointed to [not have won any PSL awards] because for me I prefer the trophy you know? It’s a sport of a group, so for me, the most important thing is to win the trophies,” the Chilean told iDiski Times.

“For me, the disappointment was not winning the MTN8, not winning the Nedbank [Cup], not winning the [CAF] Champions League. So, for this year, it’s the challenge I have personally after the individual things [are secondary]. So for me, it doesn’t matter.

“I’m happy here because I play a lot of games, so when they players play many games of course we improve every day, I’m so happy here and this is my challenge in this season, to play, play play.”

Allende joined Sundowns in July 2022 from Uruguayan side Montevideo City Torque and has made 77 appearances, scoring eight goals, and providing as many assists.

The Chilean knows he has underperformed at Sundowns

The midfielder is among the key players for the Brazilians and will play a crucial part next season when Sundowns challenge on multiple fronts.

Masandawana begin their season with an MTN8 quarter-final duel against Polokwane City on Sunday 11, August where the Chilean will be expected to show his qualities after what is considered a low return of goals and assists despite his huge price tag.

“I think I can create more goals, more assists, for me and of course for Sundowns,” he added.
