‘He won’t solve their problems’ – Ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach gives verdict on new Amakhosi defender

The veteran Turkish tactician has shared his opinion on one of the Glamour Boys’ fresh faces

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral does not feel the club’s new signing Rushwin Dortley can hit the ground running.

While he is happy that the youngster chose to sign for Chiefs, Ertugral wants the Glamour Boys to bring in more experienced defenders for Dortley to learn from rather than throwing him into the deep end from the off.

“Rushwin is a good signing for Chiefs but he needs time,” Ertugral, who coached Amakhosi between 1999 and 2009, told iDiski Times.

Do Chiefs still need to sign more defenders?

“The Chiefs’ pressure at the back could put too much pressure on him. Great for the future but not at the moment to solve their problems, which for me the collective defensive reflexes has to be better.”

Dortley joined Chiefs in July in a deal believed to be worth R6 million from Cape Town Stars, becoming their third signing following the arrival of goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy and defender Bongani Sam, who crossed over from Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.

Chiefs have since added former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Gaston Sirino and are plotting a deal for another Cape Town Spurs player Asanele Velebayi as coach Nasreddine Nabi looks to strengthen his squad.

Dortley is seen as one for the future at Naturena

Dortley was a key player for Spurs even though they were relegated from the PSL, making 26 league appearances in 2023-24.

Chiefs see him as one of the players to build a team around for the future but opinion is still divided whether he should be trusted with the responsibility of leading their defence next season or be integrated slowly into the side.
