The highly-rated Bucs attacker has earned top reviews from the Amakhosi great

Patrick Maswanganyi has received praise from Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo who believes he is one of the greatest players South Africa has produced.

Maswanganyi enjoyed a remarkable season with Orlando Pirates which saw him end the campaign with two trophies, the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup, the latter in which he scored in the final as the Sea Robbers beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1.

His good displays did not escape the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos who called him up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe and Khumalo feels all the plaudits and recognition are well deserved.

‘One of the greatest players that we have ever produced’

“One of the greatest players that we have ever produced and we thank Orlando Pirates obviously for giving him the opportunity because I think that’s where his game started to unveil and started to change,” Khunamo said on Sports Night Amplified With Andile Ncube, as quoted by iDiski Times.

Khumalo feels Maswanganyi is among talented players South Africa have that should be given freedom to express himself without a lot of tactical restrictions.

“I’ve seen an unbelievable left-footed player that has a big heart. A player that can carry the team, only if also we allow him to be himself,” added the Chiefs legend.

Maswanganyi bagged 10 goals and 12 assists in 2023-24

“We don’t have to restrict the likes of Themba [Zwane], Tito, you know. Let them be themselves. Let them be players that can take us forward because you still have like your [Bathusi] Aubaas or [Teboho] Mokoena and [Sphephelo] Sithole that can be like defensive midfielders for them you know.”

Popularly known as Tito, Maswanganyi enjoyed a good 2023-24 campaign when he bagged 10 goals while providing 12 assists in all competitions.

The stellar show earned him four nominations in the PSL awards, being PSL Player’s Player of the Season, PSL Midfielder of the Season, MTN8 Last Man Standing and Nedbank Cup Player of the tournament, highlight how important he was for the Buccaneers.
