Van Rooyen blow for Pirates ahead of MTN8 clash

Published on by

Orlando Pirates will be without their new signing Deano Van Rooyen when they face Cape Town City in the MTN8 clash.

The two sides will meet in the semi-final first leg on Wednesday, 28 August at 18:00 at DHL Stadium.

The match was initially scheduled to be played on Tuesday, 27 August. However, it was postponed due to the heavy rains and wind conditions in Cape Town.

Now, with two sides battling on Wednesday, Van Rooyen won’t make his debut for the Buccaneers as he is cup-tied having featured in the same competition at his previous club Stellenbosch FC.

He came on from the bench for Stellies and played six minutes in their quarterfinal against TS Galaxy where the Western Cape side won 3-1 to advance to the next round.

WHY DEANO VAN ROOYEN WILL MISS PIRATES CLASH AGAINST CT CITY?

“A player whose name appears on a team sheet of a participating club in the competition will be deemed to be cup-tied and may not play for another club in the competition for the same season,” states the NSL book – MTN8 rules.

Having played two of Pirates’ previous three matches, Thabiso Monyane could be the man to start the match again as the first choice Thabiso Lebitso is still out injured.

Thabiso Sesane is another option for Jose Riveiro having played the position in the CAF Champions League first leg against Disciples FC.

The 27-year-old right back, Van Rooyen recently made a switch to the Soweto giants, a club he supported when he grew up.

He could make his debut on 13 September when Pirates face Jwaneng Galaxy away in the first leg of the Champions second preliminary round in Botswana.
