Velebayi handed big role by CT Spurs after failed move to Kaizer Chiefs

Cape Town Spurs winger Asanele Velebayi has been handed a big role by the club following his failed move to Kaizer Chiefs in the recently closed transfer window.

The 21-year-old was a primary target for Amakhosi in this transfer period; however, they were unable to meet the Urban Warriors' asking price to acquire the player.

Chiefs initially submitted a written offer for Velebayi two months ago, which was subsequently rejected by Spurs. They returned with another proposal just days before the transfer window closed.

Spurs had already sold one of their players, Rushwin Dortley to the Phefeni Glamour Boys in July following his impressive season with the club in the PSL top-flight.

However, the club felt Velebayi held greater value than what Chiefs had proposed for his acquisition.

On Saturday, Spurs appointed him as the club’s captain following the departure of another promising star Chumani Butsaka.

CAPE TOWN SPURS ANNOUNCE A NEW ROLE FOR ASANELE VELEBAYI

“Coach Ernst Middendorp’s decision to appoint Asanele Velebayi as the club captain is an indication of the trust he has in him as the player and person. We wish Asanele much success,” Spurs revealed via a statement.

The 22-year-old, Butsaka was signed by Stellenbosch FC as they are strengthening their squad ahead of the potential busy schedule this season.

The club is taking part in the CAF Confederation Cup and aimed to enhance their depth to effectively manage the numerous matches that lie ahead.

Spurs also lost their regular striker Ashley Cupido to Stellenbosch to replace Iqraam Rayners who joined Mamelodi Sundowns.
