Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has reacted to holding his former side Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw, ending their five-match winning run across all competitions.
Just days after being named Abafana Bes’thende head coach on Monday, Manqoba Mngqithi found himself in a highly charged situation: facing his former team, Sundowns, the very club that had let him go in December.
The Durban side, Arrows, drew first blood, with Keenan Phillips expertly heading in a free-kick to give them the lead in the first half.
But as halftime approached, Sundowns fought back. Lucas Ribeiro Costa coolly slotted home a penalty, ensuring the teams went into the break level.
MNGQITHI SAYS IT WAS A ‘GOOD CONTEST FOR SPECTATORS’
“I would not be too sure whether a draw is a true reflection of the game,” he told SuperSport TV as quoted by iDiski Times.
“The only thing I know is we showed up, we gave our best shot. We got some nice breaks at the end which could’ve decided the result.
“But unfortunately the decision-making, the technique and all those things [let us down].
“To be honest, I think we gave a very good contest to the spectators. I’m sure the supporters enjoyed a game good of football and for me that’s what matters the most.”
