Why Gilberto has not made official debut for Pirates

The winger was signed to add experience and depth in the attacking department but has not yet started any competitive game.

Orlando Pirates fans were hoping to see Angola international Gilberto make his debut at home against CS Disciples on Friday night.

The winger is among the new players who have been signed by the Sea Robbers for the 2024/25 season. He had a good campaign with Petro Atletico last season where he won a treble before sealing Bucs move.

The supporters were, however, disappointed to learn that the international winger will not be part of the team scheduled to play the Magalasy outfit.

Why did Gilberto miss the Caf Champions League clash?

The Buccaneers have now explained why the 23-year-old's competitive debut has taken time after his exploits for Pirates in pre-season.

“Apart from the list of players who are still recovering from their respective injuries, one other player who won’t be available for selection tonight is new signing Gilberto,” the club's media team stated.

Gilberto, has missed the Buccaneers’ opening fixtures as he was awaiting his work permit. However, Orlando Pirates can confirm that Gilberto has finally received the necessary paperwork to finally play in the famous Black and White. But this will only be from the next round of the CAF Champions  League qualifiers, should Pirates win tonight [on Friday night].

When will Gilberto make his debut?

Pirates faithful will have a chance to see the Angola international in action next week in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final clash against Cape Town City.

The defending champions advanced after a had-fought 3-1 win over SuperSport United on August 3. The Citizens claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United to join Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch in the last four phase.

The Eric Tinkler outfit will host Bucs at DHL Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday, August 27, with the second leg set for next Saturday at the Orlando Stadium.
