‘Why is Veli Mothwa in the Bafana team?’ asks ex-Kaizer Chiefs star

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye has questioned Veli Mothwa's inclusion in the Bafana Bafana squad following a blunder the AmaZulu FC goalkeeper made against Uganda.

South Africa dropped points in their opening match of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, drawing 2-2 at home against The Cranes.

Hugo Broos' troops scored a late equalizer, canceling out Uganda's lead, which was conceded due to Mothwa's error.

Khanye has always been against Mothwa's selection for the national team. He questioned how the Usuthu goalkeeper could make such a mistake, given his experience.

JUNIOR KHANYE QUESTIONS MOTHWA’S INCLUSION IN THE BAFANA TEAM

“I'm questioning even now, ‘why is Veli Mothwa in Bafana Bafana?’,” Khanye said on iDiski TV.

“I have been questioning this all along because even if you bench him, eventually you are going to have to play him. He has to play and represent us.

“Today, we had a situation whereby Ronwen Williams is not available because he's injured. But here we go putting Veli Mothwa in and he goes and makes a huge blunder. I need to be honest we were let down by him.

“Goal number one, I understand he was beaten, but goal number two why did he even try to think he could catch the ball?

“That guy was too far, even if the ball swayed, it was from far I think about 45 yards. Just punch that ball out I mean you are an experienced goalkeeper.

“We are not talking about a newcomer and that is where I question his selection.”

After the match against Uganda, Bafana coach Hugo Broos did says Mothwa might not start against South Sudan on Tuesday due to his mental readiness after that mistake.
