Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has revealed his favourite goalkeeper in the world.
Williams was speaking in an interview with L’Equipe, following his nomination for the Yashin trophy at the Ballon d’Or awards.
This recognition comes after his remarkable performances at both the club and international levels. He played a pivotal role in assisting Bafana Bafana to secure third place at the AFCON tournament held in Ivory Coast this year.
Additionally, he was instrumental for his club, Sundowns, contributing to their success in winning the league and the African Football League.
Williams expressed his surprise at receiving this acknowledgment, noting that it is typically attacking players who come under the spotlight.
Williams believes that the role of goalkeepers has evolved to include a more active role in attacking play, similar to his contributions at Mamelodi Sundowns.
He cited Manchester City's Ederson as a prime example of this trend, noting that the Brazilian goalkeeper is his current favorite.

WILLIAMS ON WHY EDERSON IS HIS FAVOURITE GOALKEEPER
“We see more the goal scorers in the spotlight than the goalkeepers…It's a very solitary position but our role is changing more and more,” said Williams.
“Most goalkeepers are important to create play today, they are not there to stop shots.
“I myself am a key element in our system. That's why Ederson is currently my favourite goalkeeper for his style with his skill with his feet.
“But at the beginning, I was always a fan of (Gianluigi) Buffon, he was different and playing until 40 at this level, it says everything about his professionalism.
“And it inspires. At the beginning, I didn't work as much as I do now but I learned that you shouldn't depend only on your talent.
“It was difficult not to score because I could have been a professional as a striker”
