Veteran Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Themba Zwane has appreciated the chance to skipper Bafana Bafana against Uganda and South Sudan respectively.

The 35-year-old midfielder was handed the opportunity owing to the absence of Ronwen Williams who is back from injury, but still lacking match fitness.

On Friday, South Africa host Uganda Cranes before playing the Bight Stars, both in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Masandawana skipper has further sent a message to his club coach Manqoba Mngqithi regarding where he would like to play to be more effective.

“I would like to thank the coach [Hugo Broos] for the opportunity that he gave me and I promise that I will do my best,” Mshishi stated.

“It's the free role that I am playing here at the national team. It helps me so much to connect with the strikers and the midfielders.

“I am so much more comfortable, especially when I am playing a No.10 role, playing in between the lines, and I think that's what helps me do well at the national team because I play around the box.”

Zwane lauds hard-worker Williams

Goalkeeper Williams set history by becoming the first South African goalkeeper to be nominated for the Fifa's Ballon d'Or Yashin Trophy.

The 32-year-old was exceptional last season where he first helped the Brazilians win the inaugural African Football League.

Williams then led Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish in the 2023 Afcon before playing a crucial role in ensuring his club won their seventh consecutive Premier Soccer League crown.

“[The nomination] says a lot. It shows that hard work really pays off. I mean, Ronza works a lot, he is quality and we're happy for him.”
